Abstract |
A discussion of the attitudes of three English-speaking Lower Canadian journalists at the time of the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838 in the colony. The Scottish-born Thom (1802-1890) strongly opposed the views of the French Canadian Patriotes, the Scottish-born Neilson (1776-1848) supported the reform elements of the Patriotes' platform but opposed their 92 Resolutions, and the British-born John Charlton Fisher (1794-1849), who was the Queen's printer, lost that position when articles in his Quebec Gazette were not in accord with the policy of the government.
