Abstract
The author explores the aesthetics of Mavis Gallant's (1922-2014) and Gabrielle Roy's journalistic writings. By questioning the specificity of Gallant's articles in The Montreal Standard (1944-1950) and Roy's in the Bulletin des agriculteurs, the author focuses on the connections between their journalistic experiences and their texts, through the description of the entire body of their journalistic production and through the close reading of selected pieces, rather than searching for the traces of their newspaper careers in their later fictional work. Using concepts related to the study of genre and creative nonfiction, the author argues that the physical displacement of the two journalists in the city, the province and the whole country is accompanied by a textual displacement. Illustrating in its own way the historical proximity between newspapers and Quebec and Canadian literature, this parallel between Gallant and Roy highlights the socio-historical context. At the same time, taking into account the constraints particular to the two forms of l'écriture du réel practised—features and reportages—, it shows what their journalistic writings have in common, and how they differ.
