Abstract |
The Montreal-born Rosanna Eleanor Leprohon (1829-1879), née Mullins, shifted her literary focus after her 1851 marriage to French Canadian Dr. J.I. Leprohon from novels of manners set in England to historical romances about Quebec society. Her best known works are The Manor House of de Villerai (1859-60) and Antoinette de Mirecourt (1864). The author examines a gothic-romance novel by Leprohon titled "The Dead Witness; or, Lillian’s Peril," published in installments in the short-lived (1870-1872) Montreal literary periodical The Hearthstone from 3 August to 5 October, 1872. The author compares The Dead Witness to Leprohon's earlier works.
