Abstract |
The response to a surge of immigration from Britain to British North America in the early nineteenth century created several private emigrant societies in Upper and Lower Canada. The author points out that in Montreal, the Montreal Emigrant Society was first founded in 1820. Cholera, which citizens of Montreal identified with immigration, spurred a renewed Emigrant Society in 1831 to provide safe passage, employment, and relief to poor and destitute immigrants from Ireland and Great Britain. From 1831 to 1835, the Montreal Emigrant Society provided relief to 49,740 immigrants. By the later 1840s, its work had been in the main replaced by the growing role of government in aiding immigrants.
