Abstract
Elias Walker Durnford (1774-1850) was the commanding officer of the Royal Engineers in the Canadas from 1816 to 1831. The construction of the Quebec City citadel is considered his major engineering accomplishment in British North America, although Durnford was also in charge of rebuilding Quebec's Palais gate as well as repairing the city's Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. The author gives a description of social life in Montreal and Quebec City in the first decades of the nineteenth century.
