Abstract
A description of life in Montreal in the late nineteenth century. The author pays special attention to the harmonious coexistence of the English and French populations created by the mutually-acceptable segregation of their two communities. He also examines the social and economic position of the small American community living in Montreal. This was one of eight articles that the author wrote about Canada for Harper's New Monthly Magazine, seven of which were focussed on Quebec.
