French, English, and the Idea of Gay Language in Montreal
|
Abstract |
In March 1971, Montreal's first gay liberation group was formed and from the start tensions existed between Francophone and Anglophone members over language. Using this group formation as a starting point, the author examines the interplay between French and English in gay life in Montreal, and the influence of gay English in the development of a sense of gay community for Quebec Francophones.
