Abstract |
Includes architectural information on Quebec City's former Wesleyan Methodist Church, built in 1848 according to the plans of the architect Edward Staveley (1795-1872). In 1925, Quebec City's Wesleyan Methodists joined the United Church of Canada, and in 1931 the congregation merged with the former Chalmers Presbyterian congregation (which had also joined the United Church in 1925). The Wesleyan Church remained empty and unused until 1941. The building was donated to the City of Quebec, after it was purchased in 1940 by Senator Lorne C. Webster (1871-1941), which entrusted it to L'Institut Canadien to house its library and to use as a concert and meeting hall.
