Abstract |
A study of the lives and work of ten Montreal women in the 1920s and 1930s who were associated with the Beaver Hall Group of painters. The group, named after a studio at 305 Beaver Hall Hill in Montreal, was an attempt to set-up a Quebec Anglophone counterpart to the Ontario-based Group of Seven. The group officially only lasted for a few years, but its influence lasted far beyond. Open to both men and women painters, it was women who initially gained the most attention and who remained in close contact in the decades that followed. The ten women and their works studied by the author are Anne Savage, Prudence Heward, Kathleen Morris, Lilias Torrance Newton, Emily Coonan, Mabel Lockerby, Nora Collyer, Henrietta Mabel May, Sarah Robertson and Ethel Seath.
