Remembering and Forgetting the Famine Irish in Quebec : Genuine and False Memoirs, Communal Memory and Migration
|
Abstract |
The author notes that the scholarly emphasis on physical memorials and state commemoration has resulted in a significant lacuna and neglect of 1847 famine Irish in Montreal, who disembarked in greater numbers, suffered more fatalities and caused higher rates of public mortality, but are commemorated to a lesser extent than elsewhere. He suggests that a significant repository of Irish famine reminiscences can be found in the form of genuine and false memoirs, in the individual and communal biographies of Irish immigrants, and in the religious orders that ministered to them relating to Irish Montreal.
