Missionary Priests in Quebec's Eastern Townships: The Years of Hardship and Discontent, 1825-1853
|
Abstract |
The trials and tribulations of the mostly English-speaking missionary priests in Quebec's Eastern Townships in the first half of the nineteenth century. The author points out that most of these missionaries were recently ordained immigrants to Quebec. One such missionary priest was the Vermont-born John Holmes (1799-1852) who was the first priest to actually reside in the Eastern Townships. Another was the Nova Scotia-born Michael Power (1804-1847) who would go on in his career to become the Bishop of Toronto. The Irish-born John Baptist McMahon (1796-after 1840) was placed in charge of ministering to Catholics in Sherbrooke, Stanstead and parts of Shefford, Missisquoi and Megantic Counties.
