Abstract |
The authors outlines the development of the printing and publishing industry and of the retail book-trade in British North America between 1751 and 1840. Part one explores the birth of printing in the colonies, the factors that contributed to its growth, and the important changes that affected the industry after 1820. Part two examines the constants which characterised colonial print works, their equipment, and their day-to-day operations. Part three traces the careers of five publishing entrepreneurs, including Quebec City's John Neilson (1776-1848), to illustrate the state of the British North American printing and publishing industry before 1840.
