Abstract |
The British-born John Ostell (1813-1892) emigrated to Montreal in 1834. He was the city's most important architect between 1836 and 1859. Among the many buildings he designed were McGill University's Arts Building (1839-1843), the High School of Montreal (1845), the Protestant Orphan Asylum (1848), and St. Ann's Church (1853). In 1856 Ostell abandoned architecture for a successful doors and window sashes and joinery manufacturing business he had established in 1852 at the St. Gabriel Locks along the Lachine Canal.
