Title
Quand le téléphone est arrivé à Sutton
Abstract
The history of the telephone in the Eastern Townships dates to1890 when the Bell Telephone Company connected the village of Sutton, in Brome County, to Bolton, Knowlton and Montreal. Four years later, the telephone line crossed the border to Richford, Vermont, connecting Sutton to the telephone network of New England and eastern Canada. The author explains that when a federal decision in 1906 forced Bell to share its lines with competitors, a number of smaller companies, mostly Anglophone familes owned and run, sprung up in and around Brome and neighbouring Missisquoi counties.
