Abstract |
The author notes that at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, extravagant costume balls became increasingly popular in cities across North America and Europe. Organised by members of the financial and political elite or influential organisations, these events represented the pinnacle of high society entertainment and left a lasting impression on an entire generation. Several of these balls took place in Quebec City and Montreal. The author found that Montreal’s McCord-Stewart Museum not only has a large number of photographs showing the French-speaking and English-speaking elite as they appeared at these ephemeral entertainments, but also several garments from two major themed balls: the 1898 Montreal Historical Costume Ball, presided over by the Governor General's wife, the Countess of Aberdeen, and the 1927 Quebec City Historical Ball, held under the auspices of Lieutenant Governor Narcisse Pérodeau. The author explains that several of these costumes bear labels, allowing us to learn about and appreciate the quality of the workmanship of a number of designers and companies, mainly from Montreal, whom members of the elite entrusted with these projects. The author offers a brief portrait of these designers, enriching our knowledge of the bespoke fashion world of that era, which is otherwise poorly documented.
