The Kottenberg Connection: Rediscovering the Laurentians' Jewish Farm Colonies
|
Abstract |
A history of the Jewish farmers who settled around the towns of Ste. Sophie and New Glasgow in the Laurentians, some twenty-five miles north of Montreal, in the early decades of the twentieth century. These settlements were established by the Jewish Colonization Association, under the local leadership of Montreal businessman Mortimer Davis (1866-1928). Among the families who moved to this area was the Kottenberg's, who in 1910 opened a "kosher hotel", the first of several in the Laurentians, that catered to Montreal Jewish families wishing to escape the summer heat of the city. The Kottenberg Hotel operated until 1952.
