Abstract |
The Scottish-born John Redpath (1796-1869) arrived in Quebec City in 1816, without funds to travel further in search of work. He then walked to Montreal, purportedly barefoot to save his shoes. By the end of his life, he had established a business empire that included the first sugar refinery in the Province of Canada, as well as banking, insurance and mining interests. He supported the established three Presbyterian churches along with the Montreal General Hospital and the Mechanic’s Institute (later Atwater Library).
