Abstract
The Royal William was the first Canadian-built ship to cross the Atlantic entirely under steam power. It was built by Messrs George Black (1778-1854) and John Saxton Campbell (17871855), from a design by naval architect James Goudie (1809-1892), and launched at Quebec City on April 27, 1831. Two years later, on August 18, 1833, it left Pictou, Nova Scotia, with seven passengers and a load of coal and arrived at Gravesend, England, after a twenty-five day passage.
