Abstract |
The author examines the unsuccessful attempts by Montreal's Jewish community between 1906 and 1921 to have Jewish representation on the Protestant Board of School Commissioners of the City of Montreal (PBSCCM). The author analyses the debates surrounding the methods of nomination for commissioners between the Protestant Board of School Commissioners of the City of Montreal (PBSCCM) and the representatives of the Jewish community. At stake in these debates was a new sharing of educational powers and responsibilities. In particular, the author examines the impact of financing mechanisms governing Montreal’s school commissions upon the expansion of a democratic space at the PBSCCM. At the turn of the twentieth century, the representatives of the Jewish community called for increased access to decision-making bodies in order to participate in the administration of the school commission, in the name of democratic and egalitarian principles. The Protestant commissioners opposed these demands, which threatened, in their view, the confessional character of the PBSCCM schools. The author indicates that, in the final analysis, the efforts of the Jewish community leadership were in vain in the face of opposition of the Protestant commissioners, who succeeded in barring the road to democratisation in PBSCCM representation until the 1960s.
