Anglophone versus francophone? Logiques identitaires chez la jeunesse scolarisée au Québec

Abstract |
According to the author, in the early 1990s many researchers noted the absence of an Anglophone collective identity in Quebec. In the 2000s, she notes, other theses suggested that advanced bilingualism among younger Anglophone generations was blurring the boundaries between Anglophones and Francophones. The author contends that her qualitative study conducted with 33 young adults educated in English-language schools in Quebec illuminates these hypotheses from another angle. A typological analysis of identities as experienced by youths whom she interviewed indicates that “Anglophone Canadian” and “Francophone Québecois” collective identities belong to the imaginary referents which English language actors use to define themselves—at least within the context of the Quebec city where there is a substantial Francophone majority. The author analyzes her data based on an approach that is centered on the social actor, and on the negotiated aspect of individual identity. She concludes by proposing an intercultural approach to deconstruct this dichotomous vision of Quebec’s linguistic identities.
