|
Abstract |
In June 1904, sixteen Canadian women journalists (eight Anglophones and eight Francophones) travelled together by train to cover the St Louis World's Fair. The women represented the most important Canadian publications of the day, including the Montreal Star, La Presse, La Patrie, the Toronto Telegram, the Halifax Herald, the Manitoba Free Press and Saturday Night magazine. Katherine Hughes was one of the sixteen, writing for the Montreal Star. The Canadian Pacific Railway underwrote the trip. The publicity man for the railway dubbed the women "The Sweet Sixteen." The author traces the fateful ten-day trip that resulted in the formation of the Canadian Women's Press Club, a professional club for the advancement of Canadian female journalists. The club folded in 2004.
