Abstract |
The authors explore perspectives on motivation for lexical borrowings from French in written Quebec English. The authors analyze the lexical borrowings from French in a written corpus of English-language journalistic, administrative, touristic, governmental, and other non-literary texts. The journalistic corpus consists of 120,447 newspaper articles from 1994 and 1995 issues of Montreal's The Gazette, as well as a dozen weekly and monthly English language newspapers from various areas throughout the province. The touristic corpus consists of over two hundred tourist guides, brochures, and pamphlets put out by government, municipalities, and tourist bureaus and agencies. The administrative corpus consists of some fifty documents, including annual reports and other publications, of English-language hospitals, English-language school boards, and English-language associations from throughout Quebec.
