Abstract |
The author makes the distinction that while the few, but not all, upper class businessmen in Quebec from 1850 to 1914 were Anglophones, not all Francophone businessmen were “petite-bourgeoisie.” A-t-on bien vu les nombreuses activités économiques qui se cachent derrière l'appellation «avocat» ou «notaire»?, he asks. He offers examples of Francophones who were involved in banking, railways and politics, and exerted a strong control over regional economies. Post-war monopolization benefited the upper class, but the entire middle class, Anglophone as well as Francophone, was marginalized during this period.
