Abstract |
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts traces its roots to the establishment in 1860 of the Art Association of Montreal by a group of predominately Montreal Anglophones. The art gallery of the Association was opened in 1879 as the result of a gift of land, money and ninety canvases and eight bronzes by Montreal tailor Benaiah Gibb (1798-1877). The name was changed from the Art Association of Montreal to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1949.
