‘Another World’: William Ord Mackenzie’s Sojourn in the Canadas, 1839-1843

Abstract |
On February 11, 1839, a twenty-three-year-old recently graduated British army surgeon began his first posting abroad, to Canada--a voyage to "another world." William Ord Mackenzie's account of that journey and that posting, from February 1839 to October 1843, is documented in a journal, written in five volumes, and sent to the family home in Edinburgh as each was completed. Mackenzie (1815-1898) was posted for a time in Quebec, including in December 1839 to Rivière-du-Loup. The journal presents a glimpse into post-Rebellion Canada - its politics, its people, both important and well-known, and many unknown to the modern reader, its geography and natural history, its weather, its social and economic life.
