Abstract |
Kenelm Conor Chandler (1773-1850), an Anglican by religion, bought the seigneury of Nicolet including its manor-house in 1821. From his arrival in Nicolet, Chandler asserted his rights as seigneur and insisted upon the honours that went with his title, including the seigneur’s pew and the privileges of the holy water and consecrated bread in the local (Catholic) church. That didn’t sit well with the Catholic curé of the parish, the French-born Jean Raimbault. Presenters Julie Miller and François Roy tell an interesting tale in the Protestant cemetery of Nicolet where Chandler is buried about the “infamous dispute of the Holy Host” between Chandler and Raimbault.
