The Montréal First Nine: A Study of English Language Newspaper Coverage of Baseball in Nineteenth Century Montréal
|
Abstract |
The author examines the ties between Montreal and American industrialists that led to a cultural exchange that brought a new brand of news reporting and an appreciation for baseball to the city. Although Montrealers were not particularly skilled at baseball, middle class and working class men alike enjoyed the game from 1870s onward. The author notes that popularity increased so much that by the early 1880s, Montreal entered its first golden age of baseball. The English language newspapers eagerly reported on the state of club affairs, listed box scores, and covered games.
