Abstract |
The authors note that considering that one in nine Canadians hospitalized for mental illness will return to the emergency room less than a month after discharge, it is important to document, from a socio-historical perspective, the "trans-institutional" itineraries of people suffering from mental disorders. They present in this article their research on a survey they were conducting on the evolution of mental health care services in official language minority communities, in particular the Francophone communities of Eastern and Northern Ontario and Montreal's Douglas Hospital. The Douglas Hospital was founded in 1881 to served English Protestant patients. In 1970, it became a non-denominational Anglophone (Protestants and Catholics) institution, and in 1977 it became a bilingual institution (Anglophones and Francophones). The authors' purpose in cross-referencing studies between two French-speaking regions of Ontario and the evolution of Montreal's Douglas Hospital was to gain a better understanding of the impact of "language of service" and "culture" factors on the mental health of the Ontario Francophone minority communities. Less attention by the authors is paid to Montreal Anglophones.
