An Independent Report of the History Experts Committee on the provincial History of Québec and Canada and Approved English Textbooks

Abstract |
In September 2017, the Ministry of Education implemented a revised Secondary III and IV compulsory History of Québec and Canada program. This program raised a number of issues that became of concern to the English Montreal School Board (EMSB). Given these concerns, the EMSB commissioned an three-person independent History Experts Committee to review the content of this program as well as the Ministry-approved English-language textbooks. The History Experts Committee's 30-page report was critical of the narrow and ethno-centric, Québécois nationalist focus of both the program and the approved English textbooks. The three-person History Experts Committee was composed of: Terry Copp, professor emeritus of history at Wilfrid Laurier University and former professor at McGill and Sir George Williams universities; Jennifer Lonergan, a Canadian historian and co-founder and executive director of the Montreal-based charity Artistri Sud; and John Zucchi, professor of history at McGill University.
