Abstract |
In 1862, two groups of Montreal numismatists studying money and medals united into one society. On December 9, 1862, the Anglophone Natural History Society of Montreal, founded in 1827, merged with the Francophone Société historique de Montréal, founded in 1858, to form the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society of Montreal, known in French as the Société de numismatique et d'archéologie de Montréal, later re-named the Société d'archéologie et de numismatique de Montréal. The author points out that 78 percent of the new society's executive council were Anglophones between 1862 and 1880, reducing to 66.7 percent between 1881 and 1890, and to 52.3 percent between 1891 and 1899.
