'What a Misfortune that Poor Child Should Have Married Such a Being as Joe': Les fils prodigues de la bourgeoisie montréalaise, 1850-1900
Abstract
A number of nineteenth century bourgeois families had to cope with the problem of 'incompetent' sons amongst their midst. Given their social standing and the expectations placed upon these sons as bearers of family lineage, these young men were considered failures. The author explores one aspect of this problem: 'prodigal' sons of late-nineteenth century Montreal families – sons considered to be idle, spendthrifts, and irresponsible in the eyes of relatives. The wives of prodigal sons were often deeply affected by their husbands' escapades. These women had to compensate for their husbands' shortcomings, often becoming the heads of households.
