The Union Bill of 1822 and the Subsequent Union and Federation Schemes in Their Relation to British Policy in Canada prior to 1837
|
Abstract |
An examination of the failed 1822 attempt to politically unite the colonies of Lower and Upper Canada. The Union Bill was an attempt by British and colonial authorities to stymie the growing political power of the French Canadian bourgeoisie and its demands for responsible government, Legislative Assembly control of the civil lists, and an elected Legislative Council.
