Abstract |
An Irish Canadian, a French-Canadian, and a Jewish Canadian found in French Canada inspiration for poetry. Drummond (1854-1907) wanted to introduce the habitant farmer to English-speaking Canada; Coderre (1893-1970) wanted to describe the poverty and corruption of Montreal during the Depression; and Klein (1909-1972) wanted to analyse a mentality similar to his own. The author gives a detailed study of the poems of these three Montrealers by considering biographical and sociological elements of their poems to see why they differ in the image of French Canada.
