Abstract |
The Montreal-born economist Eric William Kierans (1914-2004) was the Director of the School of Commerce at McGill University and President of the Montreal Stock Exchange in 1960 before entering provincial politics in 1963. He was appointed Minister of Revenue (1963-1965) and then Minister of Health (1966-1967) in the Quebec Liberal government of Premier Jean Lesage. In 1968, Kierans entered federal politics and was elected to the House of Commons, serving as Postmaster-General (1968-1971) and Minister of Communications (1969-1971) in the cabinet of Liberal Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. After leaving politics in 1972, Kierans taught at McGill and at Dalhousie University.
