Title
Une émeute incendiaire : la destruction du parlement à Montréal (25 avril 1849)
Abstract
The burning of the Parliament building, then located in Montreal, by English-speaking Montrealers protesting the passage of the "Act to provide for the Indemnification of Parties in Lower Canada whose Property was destroyed during the Rebellion in the years 1837 and 1838", also known as the Rebellion Losses Bill, happened on April 25, 1849. The author outlines the causes of the events leading to the protest on April 25th that resulted in the destruction of the Parliament building, pointing out that the English-speaking rioters were as much protesting British colonial policies as they were protesting the compensation to Francophones who participated in the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838.
