Des langues en partage? : cohabitation du français et de l'anglais en littérature contemporaine
Abstract
Th author points out that more and more, prose works are appreciated for using a multiplicity of languages within the same text. She asks: Can several languages in the same text serve as vehicles for the relation of a story? Can they coexist in any reciprocity? The author analyzes five texts whose narration mobilizes both French and English. The novels are: Anglo-Quebecers Gail Scott's Heroine (1987) and Robert Majzels' Hellman's Scrapbook (1992) ; British writer Christine Brooke-Rose's Between (1962); L'Homme invisible (1981) by Franco-Ontarian Patrice Desbiens; and Acadian writer Jean Babineau's Bloupe (1993). The author argues that beyond the obvious contextual disparities, it emerges from the analysis of these texts that the stakes of language cohabitation lie in the fact that they belong to literary and cultural spaces whose narrative, in order to register, must force the redefinition.
