|
Abstract |
The author examines the role played by the Canadian Jewish community during the Second World War, particularly the approximately 17,000 individuals who enlisted, representing ten percent of the Jewish population in Canada at the time. The book contains interviews with surviving veterans, and family of deceased veterans, about their experiences, as well as profiles of such military heroes as Montrealer Sgt. Samuel Moses "Moe" Hurwitz (1919-1944), the most highly decorated non-commissioned member of the Canadian Grenadier Guards during the war. The author also examines the role played by the homeland community, community organizations including Jewish newspapers, and the clergy.
