Abstract |
Baie D'Urfé is a Montreal west island suburban community. The history of settlement in Baie-D’Urfé dates to the arrival of the first French colonists in the late seventeenth century, but little real development occurred until the railway arrived in the latter half of the nineteenth century. With the rail connection, the town became popular with well-to-do city dwellers looking to build beautiful lakefront country homes. The town was incorporated in 1911. At the first town meeting, James Morgan, one of Baie D'Urfé's founders, announced that he would donate a lakefront property, containing a Second Empire style farmhouse, for the construction of a town hall, as well as for the creation of a park. Montreal architect and town councillor, Edward Maxwell, volunteered to design and supervise the building’s renovations. The 2016 census data indicates that 54 percent of the town's population are English, and 72 percent of the population use English at home.
