The St. Lawrence Ship Channel, 1805-1865
|
Abstract |
A narrative history of the transformation of Montreal from an inland river town to a seaport city in the first part of the nineteenth century. The author examines the specific measures taken to open up the channel to ocean shipping in the years 1805 to 1865. 1805 was the date of creation of Trinity House, Quebec, which marked the inception of officially controlled pilotage and navigation in the modern sense. By 1865, channel improvement techniques had provided a channel three hundred feet wide and twenty feet deep.
