Abstract |
An account of an anonymous proposal, made by Montreal business interests in 1839, to divide the Province of Canada into five regions or "lieutenancies", to be called Quebec, Montreal, The Rideau, Toronto and Niagara. The Quebec lieutenancy was to be French and Catholic while the Montreal region was to be English and controlled by mercantile interests.
