Joseph Israel Tarte and the McGreevy-Langevin Scandal
|
Abstract |
An examination of the collusion and then falling out between the brothers Thomas and Robert McGreevy in the 1880s, and the role that Joseph Israel Tarte, editor of the newspaper Le Canadien, played in exposing this petty family quarrel and ensnaring Sir Hector Langevin, Minister of Public Works, in the scandal. Thomas McGreevy was a well-known contractor who had assisted in the construction of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa and the North Shore Railway. He represented the Conservative riding of Quebec West in the House of Commons and was a Director of the Quebec Harbour Commission and the Baie des Chaleurs Railway, and Treasurer-in-Chief of the Conservative Party in Quebec. He was also a close friend of Langevin. Thomas McGreevy's brother, Robert, was a partner in the contracting firm of Larkin, Connolly and Company, one of the major firms employed by the Department of Public Works. The brothers cooperated closely between 1882 and 1888 in ensuring contracts for Larkin, Connolly and Company, with Thomas using the name of Langevin in the collusion. Then, for reasons unknown, the relationship between the two brothers ended when, in 1888, Thomas sued his brother for the recovery of loans amounting to $354,000, and Robert exposed his brother's activities.
