The Decline of Shipbuilding at Quebec in the Nineteenth Century
|
Abstract |
An examination of the shipbuilding industry in Quebec City from 1797 to 1896. At the height of this industry in the first half of the nineteenth century, most of the city's workers, including the English-speaking segment which comprised up to forty percent by mid-century, were employed directly in this industry or in related industries. The industry went into decline in Quebec City when it didn't evolve from wooden-hulled shipbuilding to metal-hulled ships.
