Title
Langue d'accueil et langue de service dans les commerces à Montréal
Abstract
An examination of the language on commercial signs and the language that a customer was greeted in stores in various parts of Montreal in the 1980s. According to the author, west of St. Laurent Boulevard (code for English Montreal), two-third of the stores had French on their outdoor signs and displays, but in "the extreme West" only half the stores had French signs and displays. Allophones were more likely to have English signs and displays in their stores. As for the language of reception, stores in the western part of downtown, Mont-Royal, Côte-des-Neiges and Snowdon welcomed customers 60 percent of the time in French, 40 percent of the time in English. The author cautions against the introduction of "institutional bilingualism."
