Invisible Migrants: The Case of Russians in Montreal
|
Abstract |
The author studies the various aspects of visibility and invisibility regarding fourth-wave Russian migrants to Montreal. Many immigrant communities to Canada establish ethnic lobbies, cultural organizations and organize events. However, the author points out that Russians, particularly of the fourth-wave, are a notable exception. He argues that most Russians live inconspicuous lives in Montreal. Montreal poses unique questions for Russians, who by-and-large speak English as a second language, not French, and live far from cities with larger ethnic concentrations, such as Toronto and Vancouver.
