Abstract |
The Scottish-born Adam Mabane (c.1734-1792) arrived in Quebec in 1760 as a surgeon's mate with the British Army and was appointed to the Council of Quebec and a judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the district of Quebec in 1764, and to the Legislative Council in 1775. In the Legislative Council, Mabane acted as a leader of the French party and a strong supporter of the principles of the Quebec Act. He was roundly criticized by some of his contemporaries for the administration of justice in the colony which he advocated. The author attempts to revive the memory and vindicate the reputation of Mabane, portraying him as the victim of persecution among English Quebecers because of his sympathy for French Canadians.
