Abstract |
Montreal-born John Glassco (1909-1981) was a poet, memoirist, novelist, translator and pornographer. He claims to have been a gigolo in a Paris brothel in the 1920s and to have caused a scene at a Gertrude Stein party. He served as Mayor of Foster in the Eastern Townships, where he lived most of his life after returning from Europe. Glassco wrote several erotic novels, including Harriet Marwood, Governess (1967) and Fetish Girl (1972), and the fictive autobiography Memoirs of Montparnasse (1970) about his youth in Paris. He was the author of four volumes of verse: The Deficit Made Flesh (1958), A Point of Sky (1964), Selected Poems (1971) and Montreal (1973). Sutherland's opening essay provides a biographical sketch of the Governor General Award-winning poet (1971 for Selected Poems) and translator (The Poetry of French Canada in Translation (1970) and Complete Poems of Saint-Denys Garneau (1975).
