Abstract |
A description of the trade war between Simon McTavish (c. 1750-1804), head of the Montreal-based North West Company, and Alexander Mackenzie (1764-1820), a former partner in the North West Company and eventual head of the rival XY Company. The XY Company was founded in 1797 by a group of North West Company men disenchanted with McTavish's leadership. In 1802 Mackenzie gained control of the XY Company. When McTavish died in 1804, the XY company rejoined the North West Company.
