Contrasting Development of the Hydro-Electric Industry in Montreal and Toronto Regions, 1900-1930
|
| Abstract |
The hydro-electric industry in Ontario was brought under public ownership at an early stage of its development, while in Quebec the hydro-electric industry was nationalized in two steps -- in 1944 in Montreal and in the 1960s in the rest of Quebec. Most of the private hydro-electric companies in Quebec were originally owned by Anglophones. The Montreal Light, Heat and Power Company was formed in 1901 by Herbert Samuel Holt (1856-1941) through the merger of the merger of the Montreal Gas Company and the Royal Electric Company.
