Abstract |
In the early twentieth century, J.J. Harpell (b. 1874 or 1875), founder of the Garden City Press in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, began correspondence courses and study clubs for his workers. He encouraged small businesses to promote social and educational innovations, and was an advocate of life-long learning. Harpell was also an important figure in the co-operative movement in Canada, founding credit unions for his workers, as well as an arts and crafts co-operative, a building co-operative, and two worker co-operatives.
