The American-born Joseph Gould (1833-1913) was an important figure in the musical life of nineteenth-century Montreal where he immigrated in 1848. His activities as a church musician, piano and organ dealer, and journalist made a considerable impact on the artistic life of the city. In 1864 he founded the Mendelssohn Choir, which enjoyed a thirty-year lifespan. For many years, he also served as the vice-president of the Montreal Philharmonic Society.
